Cyclists can follow the old Yonahlossee Trail that lies in the shadow of Grandfather Mountain, and stop to view picturesque Linville Falls. Or they can explore Ocracoke Island, part of the Cape Hatteras Natural Seashore. This fourteen-mile long island is a treasure for lighthouse buffs. The famous Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick structure of its kind in the United States. The island was once the haunt of the infamous pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. Except for the village around the harbour, the island is undeveloped and can be reached only by boat or small aircraft.

You can begin your hike among the alders, sycamore and river birch of the coastal and piedmont regions, and ascend into the spruce and fir forests of the mountains. The Mount Mitchell Trail, a trek of about five-and-a-half miles, is one of many popular hikes.
